 CRUISER INFORMATION

....be part of the action!

Planning your visit

Welcome!

We are looking forward to welcoming cruisers to beautiful Zihuatanejo!

Visiting boats usually anchor in the bay in front of the town with all amenities within easy walking distance.. There is a modern marina a short bus ride away in Ixtapa which is ideal if you wish to leave your boat to return home or for some inland exploring.

Getting ashore

Dinghy parking and Valet Service: The best landing point is on Playa Principal, just to the right of the pier and before the fishing boats. The waves are generally gentle here and our enterprising 'Dinghy Valets' Jesus and Mateo will be waiting for you. They will assist you ashore as well as helping you launch your dinghy when you return to your boat. Often they will remain on the beach to watch the dinghies - a great service. A minimum tip of 20 pesos in and 20 pesos out is suggested. Please bear in mind that even in Mexico, sometimes things go a bit sideways and our Dinghy valets might miss you just once in a while but they love to see the cruisers and help out as much as they can.

Panga & Water Taxi: Coordinator - Jorge- looks after all the guests boarding for the on-the-water Sailfest events as well as providing taxi service from the pier to your boat by arrangement and during daylight hours only. Jorge speaks English and can be called at: 755-111-0194. His boat is called 'Rumbo Sur' He has a VHF which should be on 22A.

Waste Disposal

The bay of Zihuatanejo is a beautiful and popular area for watersports of all kinds. Please be especially mindful of others both on, in and around the water when it comes to disposal of waste. Please bag your garbage including food waste, cigarette butts etc and deposit ashore. There are bins on the pier for this purpose. With regard to sanitary waste, you must comply with the legal requrement to use a holding tank and discharge it in accordance with the law. In most cases, tanks can be emptied in open ocean at least 3 miles from the shore.

Anchoring

Anchoring Protocol for Sailfest boats: . …during Sailfest (Feb 11 to 25, 2023) please mark your GPS anchor location and use just that spot. This allows Sunset Cruise boats to easily return to their spot at dusk plus allows the Panga guys to get familiar with where to find the boat. The anchorage will get crowded and it helps immensely if everyone stays in the same place. Ideally anchoring closer to the pier helps us out (rather than across the Bay near Las Gatas)

VHF Radio

Morning net - Monday to Saturday 0830 Channel 22A

As well, there are some basic differences from hospitals in Canada and the US that folks should understand, among them: a family member or friends is expected to stay in hospital with the patient at all times-in the private hospitals a bed, sofa, futon is supplied, but in IMSS and the General, only a wooden stool is there; that family member or friend will be expected to make trips to the farmacia for medications since hospitals here do not have pharmacies or drug supplies; basics such as soap, toothpaste, TP, etc need to be supplied; and blood supply is extremely limited and when needed, is expected to be replaced or in some cases, outright supplied with the patient/family member/friend locating the donor(s).
